In a recent interview with Tucker Carlson, Russian President Vladimir Putin took the time to lay out at length his understanding of Russian history. Scholars have rightly criticized his portrayal as untruthful, but they are missing the point. The purpose of a narrative is not to tell the truth or even to convince; it is to stir up the right emotions and to justify power.
